This is a slide show of North American Guqin Aossoication's events review. Background music Liu Shui Flowing Water played by Wang Fei, director of the North American Guqin Association. This piece is more than 700 years old, and is perhaps the most famous Chinese classical composition. The story behind it concerns the scholar Yu Boya and his friend the woodcutter Zhong Ziqi. The guqin music played by Yu Boya was as grand as the high mountains and as lively as flowing water, but only Zhong Ziqi could perceive this in his music. As a result of this mutual appreciation they became very close friends. When Zhong Ziqi died, Yu Boya destroyed his guqin and vowed never to play again, because he felt nobody else could understand his music. This is the origin of the Chinese expression zhi yin -- "knowing the sound", which means a confidant or soulmate. The version played by Wang Fei is the same as that included on the gold CD to represent Chinese music, sent into space by NASA in 1977. NAGA was founded in 1997 by Wang Fei, an internationally known guqin player. Its mission is to promote aspects of Chinese culture through the traditional art of the guqin and to build a bridge for cultural exchange and mutual understanding between the Chinese and American communities. In the last ten years NAGA has grown in membership and has increased the number of programs it offers to the public. It invites guest presenters and performers to its events as a way of expanding its mission of bringing Chinese cultural heritage to local communities. Dionne Warwick's Love at First Sight, a 1977 album released on the Warner Brothers Label introduced the hauntingly beautiful and introspective Peter Larson / Josh Rubins tune "Since You Stayed Here," which was used in their 1985 off-Braodway play "Brownstone". The tune was one of several strong tunes on the album. With the release of this album, Dionne completed her contractual obligation to Warner Brothers Records. It is ironic that mega superstar Dionne, when she signed with Warner five years before for the largest contract ever given a female singer, had been named for the fourth year in a row the top female singer in several national polls. By the time Dionne finished her tenure at Warner Brothers, her recording career had stagnated and was virtually without hits with the exception of 1974's # 1 Then Came You, although she remained a popular television star and a huge concert draw throughout the world. Dionne Warwick was planning to quit the music industry entirely and use her music education skills to teach on the university level. Dionne had completed her Masters Degree from the Hartt College of Music and in 1989 she completed her studies at Hartt which led to a doctorate in Music Education. Dr. Dionne Warwick did a series of lectures on popular music in the 1990s at Harvard and several other Universities in the USA. In 1978, Clive Davis told Dionne "You may be ready to give up the music business, but the business is not ready to give you up." She would soon sign with Davis' Arista Records and would enjoy one of the biggest comebacks in the history of popular music.Bette Midler recorded a cover version of the tune in 1990.

Dionne Warwick's Love at First Sight, a 1977 album released on the Warner Brothers Label yielded the single of the same name. The tune was written by Chris Rae, Gary Shury, Ron Roker, and R. McDonald. The tune failed to chart nationally but received airplay in North and South Carolina, Georgia and Virginia and is considered a beach music classic among Atlantic surfers. The tune was also featured on the Rhino anthology "Rare Beach Music Classics" from 1989. The tune features a killer introduction and a grooving track and should have been a hit. With the release of this album, Dionne completed her contractual obligation to Warner Brothers Records. Over 100 Dionne Warwick videos on Dibotis's Dionne Warwick Channel! Dionne Warwick was planning to quit the music industry entirely after her tenure ended in 1977 for Warner Brothers Records and use her music education to teach on the University level. In 1978, Clive Davis, legendary producer and head of Arista Records told Dionne "You may be ready to give up the music business, but the business is not ready to give you up." She would soon sign with Arista and would enjoy one of the biggest comebacks in the history of popular music. In 1979, I'll Never Love This Way Again", a huge international hit, ended Dionne Warwick's five year dry spell in the most spectacular fashion. The tune peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, #6 in Canada and #13 on the Billboard Magazine R&B Chart. The tune won Warwick a 1980 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and the tune Déjà Vu won for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, the first female vocalist to win in both categories in the same year. The tune received the RIAA Gold Award for sales of over 1 million copies and her Arista debut album, Dionne, reveived the RIAA Platinum Award for album sales of over 1 million copies. Cheryl Ladd had previously recorded this Richard Kerr-Will Jennings composed song as "I Know I'll Never Love This Way Again" in 1978, and Clive felt that Dionne could turn it into a blockbuster hit. Clive paired Dionne with producer Barry Manilow with one proviso on the project: they had to record "I'll Never Love This Way Again". Dionne love the tune but initially expressed reservations to Clive about working with Manilow, not because she didn't love Barry's music, her reservation was based upon his unique sound and Dionne stated she didn't want to become Dionne Manilow. The minute Dionne and Barry rehearsed together, the magic struck and Dionne was completely at ease. The album Dionne was critically acclaimed and Dionne was praised for her virtuosity. A bit of trivia: Dionne completed her Masters Degree from the Hartt College of Music and in 1989 she completed her studies at Hartt leading to a doctorate in Music Education. Dr. Dionne Warwick did a series of lectures on popular music in the 1990s at Harvard and several other Universities in the USA. Dionne is one of a few stars to hold a real Doctorate. Dionne's doctorate was earned, not by honorary bestowal, but by completing the requisite course work.

Elvis Presley, sings If I can dream, a song with a dream of hope. This song has powerful lyrics and Raw Emotion Vocals that are awe inspiring!!!Elvis is still The King Of Rock N Roll 30 years after his death!!! Elvis will always be the King. From the very moment I heard on that hot August day in 1977 that Elvis was dead I have had an idea in my head to pay tribute to his many achievements.Elvis was so much more that a singer, he was a living Legend.Elvis: He dreamed, and he achieved!!! Sun Studios, Memphis 1954,Elvis Presley n Johnny Cash meet in this small studio at the same time, and Both become Legends!!!Elvis Presley is the primary focus, yet I had to include Johnny as I find it amazing that these two showed up at the same place, same time...Johnny overcame his addictions,BUT as he pointed out many times, only the love of June Carter Cash and her determination to see him thru, saved him from drugs. I wish Elvis could have had the same Rock in his life. One friend said something that was food for thought-Could you ever imagine an old Elvis??? I know Elvis thought of it a lot and the drugs were clouding his judgment. Its always hard to watch his last concert knowing his heart was agonized over the Memphis Mafia writing that horrible book about him, and seeing his failing health.RIP Elvis!!!The Lyrics, Video, Audio, are the property of the respective authors, artists and labels, the video provided for educational and Artist promotional purposes only , If you like the song, please help support Elvis Presley's music by purchasing his CD's wherever they are legally for sale..Rhodescabbin claims no ownership rights to this Video/Audio.
