Go to http://www.panonthenet.com/classics/pan_rebels.htm for the full performance of this selection - "In My House" - as arranged by Len 'Boogsie' Sharpe. In the late 80's a group of young, innovative, progressive, talented and rebellious steelpan musicians known as Pan Rebels left their mark on New York pan as no other has. In many respects Pan Rebels' birth signalled the dawning of the new and current age in the New York pan music continuum. Pan In New York was going to become primarily a youth movement. New ideas, interest and people would become critical components of the New York pan scene. And Pan Rebels was always at the forefront - trying new things although they are not always the ones who received the credit when it became popular. It is not surprising that Pan Rebels started the now-famous New York J'Ouvert celebrations.Simultaneously, a young group of New York electrical and broadcasting engineers known as Basement Recordings were also experimenting and working closely with Yamaha Corporation of America - who recognized their brilliance immediately - to fine tune its digital recording technology. Yamaha provided Basement Recordings with one of it's then-unreleased 24-bit digital recorders to test and make recommendations. The unit was then known as the DMR8 which would become the corner stone on which all future Yamaha digital recordings technology would be based. As faith or luck would have it, many of the engineers at Basement Recordings were also pan musicians. Even before the introduction of the DMR8, Basement Recordings was light years ahead of any other group or production team in terms of producing quality steelband recordings. Since the mid-80's they had already developed a technique they label as the 'box and one' specifically for the steel orchestra. It received rave reviews and write ups in many of the broadcasting and professional audio journals. Now armed with this digital recording goliath - that was in many ways way ahead of its time - Basement now had the tools to capture the full dynamic range of the steel orchestra without compromise. Moreover they were committed to producing outstanding recordings that could stand next to any great music productions regardless of genre - and showcase the greatness of the 'Boogsies' and 'Bradleys,' with any of their contemporaries. In Pan Rebels - Basement Recordings found kindred sprits - young musicians who were not tied to conventionality - furthermore they were not afraid of the presence of technology. Add the great Len "Boogsie" Sharpe, the ultimate unconventional arranger and what you got was magic. Basement Recordings always looked forward to recording Pan Rebels steel orchestra. They were young people; they understood the power and importance of recording and immortalizing their music works/material. As a matter of fact the band's management viewed Basement's recording them as a critical part of their panorama season. World-renowned arranger Len 'Boogsie' Sharpe was perfect as he supported, encouraged and understood what Basement and Pan Rebels were undertaking. Interestingly enough Basement's and Len 'Boogsie' Sharpe's paths would cross many times in other professional arenas in the future - of particular note would be their coming together with legendary master drummer Max Roach on future recording projects. The Pan Rebels - Basement Recordings collaborations produced many recording gems that featured prominent arrangers like Garvin Blake and Pelham Goddard in addition to Len 'Boogsie' Sharpe. Even though the orchestra has been inactive since 2002 - with their musical works and contributions to the New York Steelband music scene, while spearheaded by the dynamic trio of Anthony 'Pra' Trebuse, Gary Rogers and Michelle Williams - Pan Rebels remains a New York steelband fixture.

Song featured in Sami Yusuf's "My Ummah" album, done with english text of the lyrics.I made this after watching Sami Yusuf and Isam on a concert together performing this song. They pointed out that this song speaks of any troubled children in the world, even if some lyrics explicitly point to the Palestinian struggle. All of the videos on this song that I saw on YouTube represent that particular struggle only. I'd like to return to the concept of the creators of the music, and try to incorporate all of the world's children's suffering-- this is my attempt at it.Please rate it and tell me what you think-- constructive criticism is highly preferred over blind offense, and appreciation is always welcomed. If you want to help, give your time or your earnings to causes you believe in. It's not how much you give, it's that you give. This is my preference charity outlet that I trust, but you can choose your own:www.islamic-relief.com (International)www.irw.org (USA) - recipient of Four Star Charity by Charity NavigatorCorcerning Music and Islam:After searching the quran and found empty on any banning of music, I turn to Hadeeth:Hadeeth Shahih Muslim (excerpts from www.quran.net)Muhammad, peace be upon him allows the enjoyment of singing and musical instruments. Hence, music is not haram.Book 004, Number 1942: " 'A'isha reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) came (in my apartment) while there were two girls with me singing the song of the Battle of Bu'ath. He lay down on the bed and turned away his face. Then came Abu Bakr and he scolded me and said: Oh! this musical instrument of the devil in the house of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)! The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) turned towards him and said: Leave them alone. And when he (the Holy Prophet) became unattentive, I hinted them and they went out, and it was the day of 'Id and negroes were playing with shields and speare. (I do not remember) whether I asked the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) or whether he said to me if I desired to see (that sport). I said: Yes. I stood behind him with his face parallel to my face, and he said: O Banu Arfada, be busy (in your sports) till I was satiated. He said (to me): Is that enough? I said: Yes. Upon this he asked me to go."Song/Music are just tools, like talking, that can deliver both good and evil. Talking can do a lot of harm (backbiting, gossiping), but Talking in general isn't haram - only backbiting and gossiping is haram. Music does the same, so why some people want to claim it Haram, when it is only a tool to perform good or evil. Listening to good music is like listening to talks of good and beauty of the creation of Allah, and listening to raunchy music is like listening to gossip. So claim haram to only those music that are lustful and profane, but not all music - especially good music.Book 033, Number 6422: "Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying. Allah fixed the very portion of adultery which a man will indulge in. There would be no escape from it. The adultery of the eye is the lustful look and the adultery of the ears is listening to voluptuous (song or talk) and the adultery of the tongue is licentious speech and the adultery of the hand is the lustful grip (embrace) and the adultery of the feet is to walk (to the place) where he intends to commit adultery and the heart yearns and desires which he may or may not put into effect."King Abdullah claim title "Guardian of two Holy Cities" website reference:"On the death of King Fahd on 1st August, 2005, the title of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques was assumed by King Fahd's successor, King Abdullah." --- is from Ministry of Hajj, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia website:http://www.hajinformation.com/main/d10.htmanother reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Custodian_of_the_Two_Holy_Mosques

Lagbaja is a Yoruba word that means somebody, nobody, anybody or everybody. It perfectly depicts the anonymity of the so called "common man". The mask and the name symbolize the faceless, the voiceless in the society, particularly in Africa. Once you see Lagbaja's mask you are reminded of your own facelessness. This symbolism is so powerful that Lagbaja's mask has popularized the use of the mask concept by other artistes both in Nigeria and beyond.Though the concept was developed long before that, his first album (entitled Lagbaja) was released to National acclaim in 1993. Over the years and more albums later, the music continues to fascinate with its unique focus on a core of African drums. His music is a product of various influences ranging from traditional Yoruba music to Jazz. Often the music is purely instrumental- an interplay between traditional Yoruba percussions, drums, chants, and western instruments, especially the saxophone. When there are lyrics, they are primarily sung in Yoruba, English or a blend of the two as is colloquially spoken in Yoruba cities. Many of his songs dwell on serious social issues, while others simply entertain. Some are dance inducing while others pass serious messages in humourous ways. One thing that links all the songs together is his use of traditional African drums. Traditional Yoruba drums are the most prominent. Four families of these drums are employed in creating different grooves and moods. The dundun/gangan family is the most prominent and at times up to five drummers combine all the various components to create the polyrhythms. The bata ensemble is led by two musicians who alternate between soft high toned driving rhythms with their omele bata, and thunderous loud talk with their mum drum- iya ilu. The general percussionist leads the sakara ensemble. The fourth family, used as the backbone of the groove is the ogido, a derivative of the ancient gbedu. The ensemble of drummers constitute the larger part of the band. Vocalists and western instrumentalists make up the rest. Lagbaja's groovy fusion has been refered to as afrojazz, afrobeat, higherlife and afropop until now that he himself has christened the music AFRICANO, alluding mostly to the central role of African drums and grooves in his music. In March 1997, Lagbaja established his club, Motherlan' in the heart of Ikeja in Lagos. Motherlan's design is influenced by the traditional African town or market square, where people gather under the moonlight for ceremonies and artistic events like dance, music, story telling, wrestling etc. True to this function, over the years, it has become a place for many comedians to polish their act in front of a demanding audience. With a serene gorge of beautiful trees and greens as background, the venue merges traditional Africa with the contemporary, creating the ambience of the countryside in the urban city. Lagbaja performs at Motherlan' every last Friday of the month to a full house of faithfuls. Lagbaja is fast emerging in the forefront of contemporary African music, rich in the traditions of the continent while cosmopolitan in attitude. He has started to take his music beyond the shores of Nigeria, performing in festivals and venues around the world.Lagbaja is out now on Blue Pie for the world. You can find out more on Lagbaja by visiting www.bluepie.com.au or by searching "lagbaja" at all leading digital retailers on the planet.

this video is from a dancing event. this is the house music dancing portion of the event.Sorry I do not know the track that is playing in this video, but just to clear things up, a lot of the comments left about this video by other youtube visitors contesting the fact that the song that is playing in this video is not real "HOUSE" music, let me assure you that you are wrong. This is 100% House music. It is of a sub-genre of house called "TRIBAL." Certain sounds in the house song such as bongos, woodblocks, and pot banging constitute it to be called a Tribal house song. Most of you people on here are mis-guided with believing that house sounds all the same and only a certain way. Please keep an open mind on this subject, as though the song in the video is HOUSE and that is a FACT. Granted there are a lot of sub-genres to the House brand, this song just happens to be in a particular group of TRIBAL which is a sub-genre of House Music.

Frederick Hohman plays Tu es Petra (Thou Art the Rock) from the Byzantine Sketches of Henri Mulet upon the Great Organ of Methuen Memorial Music Hall, in Methuen Massachusetts USA. This is an excerpt from a concert given on 29 September 1996. The complete 30-minute program is one episode from the Midnight Pipes tv series. The DVD product of this is item # MP 9021 DVD, and may be acquired from many sources, including http://www.zarex.com/bin .Frederick Hohman also has a CD from Methuen on the PRO ORGANO label, entitled "Forever Methuen." Details may be accessed by entering "7066" in the Search Box at http://www.zarex.com/bin .Methuen Memorial Music Hall is operated and maintained by a not-for-profit corporation. Music events occur at the hall year-round, but especially well-known are the summer series of Organ Concerts on Wednesday evenings. This video is from one of the rarer, Sunday afternoon organ concerts. There is a history and an interesting story behind the organ at Methuen. Originally a Walcker organ from Germany from the mid-19th-century, it was first installed as the organ at Boston Music Hall, and it was the first concert hall organ in the United States. In the early 20th-century this hall was constructed in what was then a rural suburb of Boston, and the organ was relocated and housed at Methuen Memorial Music Hall ever since. The organ was updated and enlarged by Aeolian-Skinner, and in recent years, additional updates and fine maintenance make it function today as a fully modern concert pipe organ. As you will see from the video, the organ at Methuen has one of the most impressive organ cases in the world, and the decorative appointments of the hall interior are noteworthy. For more details on the organ and hall, contact: http://www.mmmh.org .Frederick Hohman is returning to Methuen in September, 2008 to play another organ concert.
