6/1/07, Champlain Valley Fairgrounds: The Marlboro Man cannot hold a candle to the elite group of Air Cowboys that travel around the world flying balloons at various festivals and gatherings. After all, can the Marlboro Man float 4,000 feet in the air and land wherever the current takes him? These single-minded cowboys are obsessed with flight. From the first time they went up in a hot air balloon, they knew there was no other life for them. The Fourth Annual Vermont Balloon and Music Festival took place June 1-3, 2007. There was hot-air ballooning, family entertainment and carnival fun at Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction. The Festival features up to 40 colorful sport balloons and special-shaped balloons from across the region and country. I went up in a Press Balloon Flight early Friday morning. It was my first time and I was petrified. My pilot was Art Voltaire (I kid you not) Moller from Albuquerque New Mexico. Four of us spent 2 hours in a tiny wicker basket floating through VT wilderness, mountains and forests, losing all sense of direction. You don't know where you are landing when you go ballooning. The wind takes you where it pleases. You can only control your up and down. We landed in Willow Hill Farm in Milton and luckily, the farmer was nice enough to let us park there. The landing was bumpy and we had to sit in the balloon basket waiting for our ride to get there - the wind pulling and tugging at our still-aloft parachute. As scared as I am of heights, it was invigorating. Even if I did have this creepy sensation that I could have jumped out at any point and plummeted to my death. Maybe next time. For now, I am just glad my camera didn't fall on its head.Featured:http://cvexpo.org/VTBalloon.aspxMusic: cccome? The $4,000 tuition does not include an additional $800 for airfare. On her own, Georgiana has managed to save $1,000 towards this trip. Unfortunately, the HMF offers no scholarships. The greatest was the importance of giving back. In 2006, the Foundation was able to give a $1,000 to Byron Martin who now studies the viola and music composition at an Oklahoma College. This year's challenge is to raise funds to assist music students like Stamos and Georgiana reach their potential. Thought I would upload a little more footage from The Movie Waterloo concerning The Duchess of Richmond's Ball of 15-06-1815It appears no You Tuber has an inkling as to the pieces played at Her Grace's Ball ?Below is a cut & paste from an earlier video regarding this matter : -This footage comes from the very historically accurate "Waterloo." {Although there is the odd historical blemish, it is still highly factual} The question is what is the piece called as the Ladies & Officers Etc. danced the night away at The Duchess of Richmond's Ball ?I may say it myself, but one does feel a bit of an expert in the finery of Battle Tactics regarding Waterloo, but can not place this wonderful piece, I even asked on Talk Back Radio a number of years ago after playing it down the line, but alas no following callers knew, as for any other goings ons at Her Grace's Ball that night, one should not take as read certain accounts, although I would fancy they would not be too far from what went on. It is the outcome of The Battle that changed European & indeed World History that interests an old reprobate such as I Lol. But one would give anything to have been a lad at that Ball on that night....dancing the night away before battle, those were the days !

Quote: "I knew virtually nothing about conventional music education, and didn't know how to teach singing. Above all, I knew nothing of what children's music was supposed to be. But the kids had a grasp of what they liked: emotion, drama, and making music as a group. Whether the results were good, bad, in tune or out was no big deal -- they had élan. This was not the way music was traditionally taught. But then I never liked conventional 'children's music,' which is condescending and ignores the reality of children's lives, which can be dark and scary. These children hated 'cute.' They cherished songs that evoked loneliness and sadness." - Hans Fenger, Langley music supervisor/arranger

December 8, 2006A Great Musician Needs Your HelpMy Friend Bruce LanghorneBy JONATHAN DEMMEBruce Langhorne, an old friend and musician/composer that I have known for many years has had a catastrophic series of medical events this year, and they are not over yet. Bruce does not have any medical insurance. ...He's a beautiful dude who has had an auspicious but unhighlighted career, including being the guy playing that amazing slide guitar on Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door". Tons of other Dylan, Odetta, Clancy Brothers, etc. He scored Melvin and Howard and Fighting Mad for me, also peter fonda's brilliant Hired Hand. He's quite a guy. When Bruce was a 12-year old violin prodigy living in Harlem in the fifties, he accidently blew several of his fingers off with a cherry bomb that he held onto too long. In the ambulance on the way to the hospital, Bruce looked up at his distraught mom and said, "At least I don't have to playviolin anymore." He has been a master on all guitars, mandolins, etc, pianos etc over the years and for many years was Dylan's first choice for important guitar parts on the albums and sometimes live, with Bruce playing all these instruments django rhinehart style, working the strings with mostly nubs instead of (his missing) fingertips.Bruce suffered a huge diabetes-related attack on his digestive system in the spring, and then had a stroke in the summer. He is recovering slowly but surely and needs to have a microscopic tumor removed from his brain when it gets big enough -- the tumor is related to his previous problems.Janet told me that Bruce sat down at the piano a couple of weeks ago, played a few notes and then just sat there silent. He told her 'my fingers used to melt into the keys, but now they don't know what to do.' He's in good spirits though, and focused now on trying to get strong for the future operation.Checks can be sent to:"JANET BACHELOR ITF BRUCE LANGHORNE", and mail to JANET BACHELOR629 SUNSET AVEVENICE, CA 90064Jonathan Demme is a film director. His films include Something Wild, Philadelphia, Silence of the Lambs and The Agronomist. The interview quoted below appeared in full on the website Film Threat: Truth in Entertainment at filmthreat.com.PETER FONDA SHOWS HIS "HIRED HAND"by Tim Merrill (2003-11-02) How did you hook up with Langhorne? I know he used to be a session guitarist for Bob Dylan, and played on "Bringing It All Back Home" and "Blonde on Blonde." Fonda: He was producing an album for me, "Got to Get You Into My Life," through Hugh Masekela's label. At the time I told him about "Easy Rider," and he told me he thought I ought make that film. Then I came back to work with him again, up comes "The Hired Hand" and I knew who was going to score it. If he were to walk in right now and you didn't see Bruce, you would feel his presence. He just emanates love and kindness, in addition to being a virtuoso on like 50 string instruments. I took him over to Hawaii once, he heard the slack-key guitar and went full-on Hawaiian! But he lives in Venice now, and he also makes a great hot sauce - Brother Bru-Bru's Hot Sauce. Bloom: There are so many things about this movie that are perfect, and Bruce's score is one of them. You can't imagine any other score with this film. And it was his first film score, right? Fonda: Yeah. Universal told me, "You can't just hire your friends, man." But the word "virtuoso," applied to musical instruments, means something. Like if I want a full string section, he'll go play fourteen different violins and violas and cellos. So I have one man I have to pay who can do all this work for me! Then they were okay with him. And by the way, on Bruce's picking hand, his thumb, his index and middle fingers are all stumps. They were blown off in a rocket accident in his backyard when he was a kid. But he had already been playing, so he had the surgeon sort of shave them down a little so he could still finger pick. And that National steel guitar that he favors, and we favored very much in the film because it has such a beautiful tone - how did he get there? He used old electric guitar strings, and this muted picking. So there's a reason his playing sounds like no one else...
