Earl's Court, London: 20 February 2008.What a night for fans of British music. Dozens of top artists filed past on the red carpet outside Earls Court on yet another freezing day. Quite a challenge for fans too. There were few good shooting positions and plenty of competition for them. Some of my regular fan-mates couldn't run fast enough to get a good spot when the gates opened. It was bedlam. One girl fell in front of me and it seemed unseemly to step over her and my prime place was gone. Fortunately security made sure unaccredited media were chucked out, leaving me with an OK spot on the barricade. Things have a habit of working themselves out. Lots of kids and their parents in the crowd that all added to the atmosphere -- it's half term btw. Plenty screaming from them, it seems they love all the stars and aren't self conscious about saying it loud. Listen to the sound if you need confirmation. Seemed odd to hear primary school kids discussing rehab, and not the song! Plenty of opportunity for the autograph folk, though many of the biggest names snuck in around the back to avoid the hubbub.Celebs and artists spotted...Matt WillisKyser ChiefsAdeleBeth DittoOne Night OnlyLeona LewisWill YoungNancy and Vic ReevesMikaMark RonsonRihannaShane WardThe HoossiersBen MillerAlan CarrLamarDavina McCallSean LennonK T TunstallArtic MonkeysCatherine JenkinsOzzy, Sharon OsbourneKate NashAlesha DixonKelly RowlandKimberley WalshSarah HardingJames BluntTess DalyVernon KayTake ThatAs usual, please let me know about errors, omissions and your comments. 6/1/07, Champlain Valley Fairgrounds: The Marlboro Man cannot hold a candle to the elite group of Air Cowboys that travel around the world flying balloons at various festivals and gatherings. After all, can the Marlboro Man float 4,000 feet in the air and land wherever the current takes him? These single-minded cowboys are obsessed with flight. From the first time they went up in a hot air balloon, they knew there was no other life for them. The Fourth Annual Vermont Balloon and Music Festival took place June 1-3, 2007. There was hot-air ballooning, family entertainment and carnival fun at Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction. The Festival features up to 40 colorful sport balloons and special-shaped balloons from across the region and country. I went up in a Press Balloon Flight early Friday morning. It was my first time and I was petrified. My pilot was Art Voltaire (I kid you not) Moller from Albuquerque New Mexico. Four of us spent 2 hours in a tiny wicker basket floating through VT wilderness, mountains and forests, losing all sense of direction. You don't know where you are landing when you go ballooning. The wind takes you where it pleases. You can only control your up and down. We landed in Willow Hill Farm in Milton and luckily, the farmer was nice enough to let us park there. The landing was bumpy and we had to sit in the balloon basket waiting for our ride to get there - the wind pulling and tugging at our still-aloft parachute. As scared as I am of heights, it was invigorating. Even if I did have this creepy sensation that I could have jumped out at any point and plummeted to my death. Maybe next time. For now, I am just glad my camera didn't fall on its head.Featured:http://cvexpo.org/VTBalloon.aspxMusic: cccome? Gold Medal for ExcellenceAudience Choice for Best Music Documentary2006 PARK CITY FILM MUSIC FESTIVALGOTTA SERVE SOMEBODY:THE GOSPEL SONGS OF BOB DYLANhttp://www.gottaservesomebody.comhttp://dylangospel.blogspot.com/The best African-American covers of Dylan songs since Jimi Hendrix. --International Herald Tribune"This DVD overflows with interest, and, more importantly, with music." -Michael Gray, author of The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia and Song & Dance Man III: The Art of Bob Dylan.Interviews with Dylan musicians: Jim Keltner, Spooner Oldham, Regina McCrary, Fred Tackett, Terry Young, Mona Lisa Young, and producer Jerry WexlerParticipating artists: Bob Dylan, Shirley Caesar, Chicago Mass Choir, Dottie Peoples, Aaron Neville, Sounds of Blackness, Helen Baylor, The Fairfield Four, Great Day Chorale, Arlethia Lindsey, Mighty Clouds of Joy, and Rance Allen.Commentary by: Paul Williams and Alan LightThis musical documentary premieres 1980 footage of Bob Dylan performing "When He Returns," the first archival performance released from this important era.Amazon.com Editorial ReviewGotta Serve Somebody - The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan is all about redemption. That's apparent enough in the music, where the struggle between sin and salvation is inherent in the tunes that are interpreted here by a host of superb gospel artists. But in a larger sense, the very existence of this DVD (and the Grammy-nominated CD that preceded it in 2003) can be viewed as redemption for Dylan himself, who weathered another controversy and emerged, if not triumphant, then certainly vindicated. When he plugged in an electric guitar in 1965, he was labeled "Judas" by the folkie faithful; ironically, when he turned to Jesus some 15 years later, proclaiming himself born again and releasing Slow Train Coming and Saved, the outcry was even louder. But once again Dylan has the last laugh, as now, a quarter of a century after the fact, it's clear that the material on those recordings was his strongest not only since 1975's Blood on the Tracks but perhaps since his '60s heyday. The quality of the songs lies in what Jerry Wexler, co-producer of the two Dylan albums, describes as the "immaculate funk" of the music, and especially in the heartfelt simplicity (especially by Dylan standards) and emotional directness of the lyrics; clearly, that's what attracted great gospel singers like Shirley Caesar (singing "Gotta Serve Somebody," the most recognized song on the two Dylan albums), Dottie Peoples (a powerful version of the beautiful "I Believe in You"), the Mighty Clouds of Joy (a rockin', sanctified "Saved"), the Fairfield Four (the stirring, a cappella "Are You Ready"), and the angel-voiced Aaron Neville ("Saving Grace") to this project. We also get Dylan himself, performing "When He Returns" at a 1980 concert, along with an animated rendering of his original "Gotta Serve Somebody." Hallelujah, y'all. --Sam GrahamBob Dylan's Gospel songs, widely reviled when new, have steadily grown in stature and acceptance over the years. Here in the hands of Gospel greats, likely the folks best suited to do them, they come up stronger than ever. Strong recommendation. Much better and more gripping than I expected. -Sing Out!Directed by Michael B BorofskyEdited by Christine MitsogiorgakisJeffrey Gaskill Executive ProducerFeatured Performances:Every Grain of Sand (Arlethia Lindsey)When He Returns (Bob Dylan)Solid Rock (Sounds of Blackness)Gotta Serve Somebody (Shirley Caesar)I Believe In You (Dottie Peoples)Saving Grace (Aaron Neville)What Can I Do For You?
