here is a bit of footage of people dancing to folk music from the new year's eve/day celebrations in kyiv in 2005. the first minute actually is footage of people dancing not to folk music but to some folk-pop, and their dancing isn't traditional. however, the last few minutes provide some fabulous footage of mostly middle- to senior-aged people singing along with and/or doing real folk dancing to musicians playing on the street. where are all the young people? do they no longer want to remember their folk dances?another note: this is from new year's 2005. the orange revolution had just succeeded in overturning the fraudulent elections and there was great hope that much would change with yushchenko as president. i mention this as a reminder of the work that is still yet to be done in ukraine. to see more footage of events on new year's eve and day 2005, go to my blog at http://dykun.blogspot.com/2007/01/new-year-eve-2005-in-kyiv-ukraine_02.html. there is a 20 minue clip there with footage of: saakashvili, yushchenko, tymoshenko, and moroz all speaking on independence square, followed by oleksandr ponomarov singing the national anthem. then there is footage of green jolly performing their song that became the anthem of the orange revolution (i.e., "razom nas bahato, nas ne podylaty (together we are many, we won't be overcome)" and after them is footage of the superstar group tartak rocking the crowd. then comes some footage of the tent camp and the folk dancing you have already seen here. enjoy! z novym rokom!

The Uganda music scene is coming up fast. More and more talented artists from all kinds of music styles come up and make their way even outside of the country. Visiting Zanzibar in summer 2006 for the shooting of the film Zenji Flava, about the Zanzibar music scene and hiphop on particular, I met the hiphop duo Sylvester & Abramz from Kampala, Uganda. Their performance on the Zanzibar International Film Festival blew my mind and especially the song Lemelako, their hitsingle, I'm still listening often. I went back to see the guys in Kampala during the filming of my second movie New Voices, about the meaning of hiphop music for youth in Kenya and Uganda. Reggea artist Pato and fellow hiphop artist Lyrical G where also attending ZIFF 2006 and in this film they perform live and explain you about their inspirations and the Swahili language barrier.This clip is a short fragment from the film Zenji Flava.

6/1/07, Champlain Valley Fairgrounds: The Marlboro Man cannot hold a candle to the elite group of Air Cowboys that travel around the world flying balloons at various festivals and gatherings. After all, can the Marlboro Man float 4,000 feet in the air and land wherever the current takes him? These single-minded cowboys are obsessed with flight. From the first time they went up in a hot air balloon, they knew there was no other life for them.The Fourth Annual Vermont Balloon and Music Festival took place June 1-3, 2007. There was hot-air ballooning, family entertainment and carnival fun at Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction.The Festival features up to 40 colorful sport balloons and special-shaped balloons from across the region and country. I went up in a Press Balloon Flight early Friday morning. It was my first time and I was petrified. My pilot was Art Voltaire (I kid you not) Moller from Albuquerque New Mexico. Four of us spent 2 hours in a tiny wicker basket floating through VT wilderness, mountains and forests, losing all sense of direction. You don't know where you are landing when you go ballooning. The wind takes you where it pleases. You can only control your up and down. We landed in Willow Hill Farm in Milton and luckily, the farmer was nice enough to let us park there. The landing was bumpy and we had to sit in the balloon basket waiting for our ride to get there - the wind pulling and tugging at our still-aloft parachute.As scared as I am of heights, it was invigorating. Even if I did have this creepy sensation that I could have jumped out at any point and plummeted to my death. Maybe next time. Japan's fascination with figure skating has amazed me for some time. In my blog I once mentioned their enthusiasm for Flamenco. Iceskating is another national pride they have been investing in. Prominent athletes have been enjoying a high social status. Surely, advertisements seem to go well with these national heroes and heroines.Tokyo is now hosting the World Iceskating Championship. Thousands of people flock to the indoor ice stadium to watch several young skaters from some four season countries. Teens would throw roses and Teddy Bears after each perfomance. The whole country is suddenly warmer in the remaining wintry season as each skater slides on the thick ice layer accompanied by the best of world musical compositions.Takahashi Daisuke is one of Japan's treasures. Dubbed as the Prince of Japan, he won the silver medal two days ago (March 24)in the prestigious event. Like a true Samurai, he pushed his rank up from fifth to second next to a French skater (You can see in the clip the audience cyring as Takahashi, now emotional himself, finished his memorable perfomance). READ METhis is a very short scene from a film I worked on in mid 2005 called Buchenwald.Buchenwald was a German concentration camp known for some of the worst and most bizarre crimes committed during the dark years of the holocaust. The movie is about a prisoner who has been in the camp for one week, who spends a night without sleep to talk to a prisoner who has been in the camp for a year. They exchange stories about life before Buchenwald while the movie flashes back and shows their stories. Through the stories we see how alike one mans week is to one mans year. This short scene from Buchenwald isn't a story or flashback; it is the imagination of the man who has been imprisoned for a full year. He was once a musician but is now forgetting what music even sounds like.Played by my good friend Markandeya who is a wonderfully talented pianist and guitarist.
