Earl's Court, London: 20 February 2008.What a night for fans of British music. Dozens of top artists filed past on the red carpet outside Earls Court on yet another freezing day. Quite a challenge for fans too. There were few good shooting positions and plenty of competition for them. Some of my regular fan-mates couldn't run fast enough to get a good spot when the gates opened. It was bedlam. One girl fell in front of me and it seemed unseemly to step over her and my prime place was gone. Fortunately security made sure unaccredited media were chucked out, leaving me with an OK spot on the barricade. Things have a habit of working themselves out. Lots of kids and their parents in the crowd that all added to the atmosphere -- it's half term btw. Plenty screaming from them, it seems they love all the stars and aren't self conscious about saying it loud. Listen to the sound if you need confirmation. Seemed odd to hear primary school kids discussing rehab, and not the song! The Twinwoods Mechanical Organ Festival is a weekend event held at the historic Twinwoods Airfield near Bedford (UK), also home of the Glenn Miller Museum. Organised by Bob West, the Twinwoods Arena comes alive to the sound of street and fairground organs during the festival, which also features crafts and other exhibits, and marks the closure of events at Twinwoods for the winter.For the 2007 show, the third year of this wonderful event, the Saturday night entertainment amongst this small and friendly gathering of enthusiasts comprised some informal performances of mechanical self-playing street organs and an impromptue accordion band inside the main hangar. After this, those of us still awake retired to the Officers' Mess Bar to continue the fun! Audiopad is a composition and performance instrument for electronic music which tracks the positions of objects on a tabletop surface and converts their motion into music. One can pull sounds from a giant set of samples, juxtapose archived recordings against warm synthetic melodies, cut between drum loops to create new beats, and apply digital processing all at the same time on the same table. Audiopad not only allows for spontaneous reinterpretation of musical compositions, but also creates a visual and tactile dialogue between itself, the performer, and the audience.Audiopad has a matrix of antenna elements which track the positions of electronically tagged objects on a tabletop surface. Software translates the position information into music and graphical feedback on the tabletop. Each object represents either a musical track or a microphone.Audiopad was developed by James Patten and Ben Recht aka localfields.
