here is a bit of footage of people dancing to folk music from the new year's eve/day celebrations in kyiv in 2005. the first minute actually is footage of people dancing not to folk music but to some folk-pop, and their dancing isn't traditional. however, the last few minutes provide some fabulous footage of mostly middle- to senior-aged people singing along with and/or doing real folk dancing to musicians playing on the street. where are all the young people? do they no longer want to remember their folk dances?another note: this is from new year's 2005. the orange revolution had just succeeded in overturning the fraudulent elections and there was great hope that much would change with yushchenko as president. i mention this as a reminder of the work that is still yet to be done in ukraine. to see more footage of events on new year's eve and day 2005, go to my blog at http://dykun.blogspot.com/2007/01/new-year-eve-2005-in-kyiv-ukraine_02.html. there is a 20 minue clip there with footage of: saakashvili, yushchenko, tymoshenko, and moroz all speaking on independence square, followed by oleksandr ponomarov singing the national anthem. then there is footage of green jolly performing their song that became the anthem of the orange revolution (i.e., "razom nas bahato, nas ne podylaty (together we are many, we won't be overcome)" and after them is footage of the superstar group tartak rocking the crowd. then comes some footage of the tent camp and the folk dancing you have already seen here. enjoy! z novym rokom!

Japan's fascination with figure skating has amazed me for some time. In my blog I once mentioned their enthusiasm for Flamenco. Iceskating is another national pride they have been investing in. Prominent athletes have been enjoying a high social status. Surely, advertisements seem to go well with these national heroes and heroines.Tokyo is now hosting the World Iceskating Championship. Thousands of people flock to the indoor ice stadium to watch several young skaters from some four season countries. Teens would throw roses and Teddy Bears after each perfomance. The whole country is suddenly warmer in the remaining wintry season as each skater slides on the thick ice layer accompanied by the best of world musical compositions.Takahashi Daisuke is one of Japan's treasures. Dubbed as the Prince of Japan, he won the silver medal two days ago (March 24)in the prestigious event. Like a true Samurai, he pushed his rank up from fifth to second next to a French skater (You can see in the clip the audience cyring as Takahashi, now emotional himself, finished his memorable perfomance). With the standing ovation and the cry subarashii (great!), he is the first Japanese male ever to have won such a distinction.Using my cell phone, I recorded his live performance from our TV!Post Script*The shouts in the background came from my wife*Thanks to Susan, my friend from Indonesia, who for a while was my consultant in YouTube stuff.

http://cdbaby.com/cd/vanarmenyaGOMIDAS VARTABED - KOMITAS (1869- 1935)One of the most renowned Armenian Churchmen and musician of modern times was Gomidas Vartabed, also known as Komitas. He was born Soghomon Soghomonian in Kutaha, Asia Minor in the year, 1869. His life had an interesting turn of events, when at the age of eleven, he was orphaned, and at a young age he was sent to a Seminary in Etchmiadzin to study. Because of his singing prowess, he decided to teach music at the Seminary after he completed his studies. In 1896, Soghomon was ordained a monk or "apegha" of the Armenian Church. A few years later he was ordained a "Vartabed", and as is the practice in the Armenian Church assumed his new name "Komitas"(or Gomidas).Komitas learned a great deal of music from the monks and continued to study music with the famous composer Kara-Mourza, which eventually led Komitas into both secular and religious music. Komitas continued to study music, and in 1896, he was awarded a doctorate degree in musicology. He later returned to Etchmiadzin as a choir director, and Instructor of music at the Seminary.Komitas wrote over three thousand songs in Armenian, Arabic, Kurdish, and Persian, and also contributed significantly to the modern Armenian Badarak. His main contribution was to rediscover Armenian folk music. He spent years traveling throughout the provinces and visiting many villages listening to native songs and dances, and making notes of them for further analysis. His work in arranging and collating the folk music he had collected over the years eventually became excellent songs for chorus music, and made the public aware of the existence of true Armenian music. In addition to the folk music, Komitas arranged the entire music of the Divine Liturgy (Badarak) of the Armenian Church, for male voices. The internationally known priest was the first non-European to be a member of the International Music Society. Komitas performed concerts in Paris, Geneva, Berne, Constantinople, Venice, and Alexandria. It is interesting to note that in the spring of 1915, during the imprisonment of leaders of the Armenian community, Komitas too was taken into custody. Through the efforts of Henry Morgenthau, Ambassador from the United States of America, and the Turkish poet Mehmet Emin Yurdakul, who admired Komitas' work, Komitas was released. After the April 24, 1915 massacres of the Armenian people by the Turks, he succumbed to mental and physical anguish and never fully recovered. Komitas lived as if a walking corpse for the next twenty years. The revered holy man died in Paris on October 22, 1935 in a mental hospital. One year after his death his ashes were transferred to Yerevan and interred in the Yerevan Panthenon. In the 1950's his manuscripts were transported from Paris to Yerevan where they were being studied and published

Gold Medal for ExcellenceAudience Choice for Best Music Documentary2006 PARK CITY FILM MUSIC FESTIVALGOTTA SERVE SOMEBODY:THE GOSPEL SONGS OF BOB DYLANhttp://www.gottaservesomebody.comhttp://dylangospel.blogspot.com/The best African-American covers of Dylan songs since Jimi Hendrix. --International Herald Tribune"This DVD overflows with interest, and, more importantly, with music." -Michael Gray, author of The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia and Song & Dance Man III: The Art of Bob Dylan.Interviews with Dylan musicians: Jim Keltner, Spooner Oldham, Regina McCrary, Fred Tackett, Terry Young, Mona Lisa Young, and producer Jerry WexlerParticipating artists: Bob Dylan, Shirley Caesar, Chicago Mass Choir, Dottie Peoples, Aaron Neville, Sounds of Blackness, Helen Baylor, The Fairfield Four, Great Day Chorale, Arlethia Lindsey, Mighty Clouds of Joy, and Rance Allen.Commentary by: Paul Williams and Alan LightThis musical documentary premieres 1980 footage of Bob Dylan performing "When He Returns," the first archival performance released from this important era.Amazon.com Editorial ReviewGotta Serve Somebody - The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan is all about redemption. That's apparent enough in the music, where the struggle between sin and salvation is inherent in the tunes that are interpreted here by a host of superb gospel artists. But in a larger sense, the very existence of this DVD (and the Grammy-nominated CD that preceded it in 2003) can be viewed as redemption for Dylan himself, who weathered another controversy and emerged, if not triumphant, then certainly vindicated. When he plugged in an electric guitar in 1965, he was labeled "Judas" by the folkie faithful; ironically, when he turned to Jesus some 15 years later, proclaiming himself born again and releasing Slow Train Coming and Saved, the outcry was even louder. But once again Dylan has the last laugh, as now, a quarter of a century after the fact, it's clear that the material on those recordings was his strongest not only since 1975's Blood on the Tracks but perhaps since his '60s heyday. The quality of the songs lies in what Jerry Wexler, co-producer of the two Dylan albums, describes as the "immaculate funk" of the music, and especially in the heartfelt simplicity (especially by Dylan standards) and emotional directness of the lyrics; clearly, that's what attracted great gospel singers like Shirley Caesar (singing "Gotta Serve Somebody," the most recognized song on the two Dylan albums), Dottie Peoples (a powerful version of the beautiful "I Believe in You"), the Mighty Clouds of Joy (a rockin', sanctified "Saved"), the Fairfield Four (the stirring, a cappella "Are You Ready"), and the angel-voiced Aaron Neville ("Saving Grace") to this project. We also get Dylan himself, performing "When He Returns" at a 1980 concert, along with an animated rendering of his original "Gotta Serve Somebody." Hallelujah, y'all. --Sam GrahamBob Dylan's Gospel songs, widely reviled when new, have steadily grown in stature and acceptance over the years. Here in the hands of Gospel greats, likely the folks best suited to do them, they come up stronger than ever. Strong recommendation. Much better and more gripping than I expected. -Sing Out!Directed by Michael B BorofskyEdited by Christine MitsogiorgakisJeffrey Gaskill Executive ProducerFeatured Performances:Every Grain of Sand (Arlethia Lindsey)When He Returns (Bob Dylan)Solid Rock (Sounds of Blackness)Gotta Serve Somebody (Shirley Caesar)I Believe In You (Dottie Peoples)Saving Grace (Aaron Neville)What Can I Do For You? digg: http://digg.com/world_news/NEWAnonymous_Basic_Protest_Training_VIDEO_for_Xenu_Attacks (just found out someone put this on there)http://www.encyclopediadramatica.com/PROJECT_CHANOLOGY/IRL_PROTEST_PAGEhttp://www.enturbulation.org/http://partyvan.eu/wiki/Project_Chanologyhttp://partyvan.info.nyud.net/index.php/Project_Chanologyhttp://harbl.wetfish.net/cosplayHello Anonymous. Welcome to the Anonymous Basic Protest Training Programme. This programme was designed to allow each and every member of Anonymous to extract the maximum amount of lulz with the minimum risk of fail. Remember, here at Anonymous we believe, that if at first you don't succeed, you fail.Pay attention, at the end of the programme there will be cake. Now, let us commence training. There are cult hives in almost every major city in the world. Check the links, or use google. Anonymous may have already organized a protest in your area. Do not visit official scientology websites to find their location, they will trace your IP address. If you are unable to travel, you can still contribute by:Spreading word of the protest.Contacting the media.Disseminating Anonymous propaganda.Designing leaflets, posters, or flyers. Or by taking part in the online campaign.Bring cake. Wear comfortable shoes. Bring a camera. Carry a sign. Download and print out leaflets to give to passers-by. Bring music; Choklit Reign, Rick Astley, and the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. But most important of all, wear a mash. It is essential to remain Anonymous. Remember, Anonymous is no one. Individuality is incompatible with Anonymous. Rely on the whole. Be part of the whole. Avoid the one.Remember, being identified as a critic of scientology can have dire consequences. Find out from Anonymous if masked protest is legal in your area. Use the links. If not, a scarf and sunglasses will suffice. Do not protest directly outside the cult. This is not Habbo Hotel. It will be considered aggressive. Instead, protest across the road from the cult. This way if a scientologist approaches you, and tries to cause trouble, the local law enforcement will view him as the aggressor. Be wary, there is an official scientology practice called 'Bull-Baiting' sanctioned by L Ron Hubbard. The Scilon will act as aggressive as possible in an attempt to provoke critics into attacking him. Do not respond, do not threaten or even insult him. If confronted by a Scilong, film the lunatic and post it on Youtube. Or better yet, recount the Xenu story. This will make him walk away quickly. It is Scilon law that no one is allowed to hear the Xenu story unless they have paid the tens of thousands of dollars necessary otherwise it will cause them to catch pneumonia and die.The cult will try to infiltrate some of it's members into the protest and cause trouble. This is in the hope that the police will stop the protest down. Distance yourself from any troublemaker. Wait for your local law enforcers to take the Scilon spy and have him party vanned. On your way home from the protest, make sure you are not being followed by undercover Scilons.Always respect your local law enforcers. Never use violenceNever threaten to use violenceDo not throw anything.Do not insult anyoneCongratulations, you have passed the Anonymous Basic Protest Training Programme. As promised, here is cake, delicious and moist.Remember you have the right to protest. As long as it is peaceful, we cannot be stopped. As long as we are faceless, we cannot be stopped. As long as we are leaderless, we cannot be stopped.
