This is a slide show of North American Guqin Aossoication's events review. Background music Liu Shui Flowing Water played by Wang Fei, director of the North American Guqin Association. This piece is more than 700 years old, and is perhaps the most famous Chinese classical composition. The story behind it concerns the scholar Yu Boya and his friend the woodcutter Zhong Ziqi. The guqin music played by Yu Boya was as grand as the high mountains and as lively as flowing water, but only Zhong Ziqi could perceive this in his music. As a result of this mutual appreciation they became very close friends. When Zhong Ziqi died, Yu Boya destroyed his guqin and vowed never to play again, because he felt nobody else could understand his music. This is the origin of the Chinese expression zhi yin -- "knowing the sound", which means a confidant or soulmate. The version played by Wang Fei is the same as that included on the gold CD to represent Chinese music, sent into space by NASA in 1977. NAGA was founded in 1997 by Wang Fei, an internationally known guqin player. Its mission is to promote aspects of Chinese culture through the traditional art of the guqin and to build a bridge for cultural exchange and mutual understanding between the Chinese and American communities. In the last ten years NAGA has grown in membership and has increased the number of programs it offers to the public. It invites guest presenters and performers to its events as a way of expanding its mission of bringing Chinese cultural heritage to local communities. here is a bit of footage of people dancing to folk music from the new year's eve/day celebrations in kyiv in 2005. the first minute actually is footage of people dancing not to folk music but to some folk-pop, and their dancing isn't traditional. however, the last few minutes provide some fabulous footage of mostly middle- to senior-aged people singing along with and/or doing real folk dancing to musicians playing on the street. where are all the young people? do they no longer want to remember their folk dances?another note: this is from new year's 2005. the orange revolution had just succeeded in overturning the fraudulent elections and there was great hope that much would change with yushchenko as president. i mention this as a reminder of the work that is still yet to be done in ukraine. to see more footage of events on new year's eve and day 2005, go to my blog at http://dykun.blogspot.com/2007/01/new-year-eve-2005-in-kyiv-ukraine_02.html. there is a 20 minue clip there with footage of: saakashvili, yushchenko, tymoshenko, and moroz all speaking on independence square, followed by oleksandr ponomarov singing the national anthem. then there is footage of green jolly performing their song that became the anthem of the orange revolution (i.e., "razom nas bahato, nas ne podylaty (together we are many, we won't be overcome)" and after them is footage of the superstar group tartak rocking the crowd. then comes some footage of the tent camp and the folk dancing you have already seen here. enjoy! z novym rokom!

Pantera was an American heavy metal band from Arlington, Texas, that formed in 1981.[1] Although initially influenced by 1980s glam metal/hard rock bands, thrash metal acts such as Slayer and Metallica as well as traditional metal bands such as Black Sabbath would prove to be influential in the band's significant change in musical direction at the end of the 1980s. From there, Pantera became a key formulator of the groove metal (post-thrash) subgenre of heavy metal music. It would not be until nine years after forming that Pantera saw its first piece of commercial success in its major label debut, Cowboys from Hell. From there, Pantera became one of the most celebrated heavy metal bands of the 1990s. Despite the generally cold reception of the band's first four albums, critics have lauded Pantera's style thereafter; Jason Birchmeier of the All Music Guide considers Pantera to be "arguably the greatest metal band of '90s and ... one of the greatest and most influential metal bands ever."[2] The band has received accolades such as ranking 45 on VH1's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock[3] and fifth on MTV's "Top 10 Greatest Heavy Metal Bands of All-Time".[4]Due to long-standing internal conflicts, Pantera dissolved in 2003. The following year, the band's guitarist, "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, was shot and killed on-stage while performing with his new band, Damageplan.Philip Hansen Anselmo (born June 30, 1968 in New Orleans, Louisiana) is a heavy metal vocalist and musician, currently performing with Down. He is best known as a vocalist, lyricist and co-composer for Pantera, but has been involved with numerous other musical projects in heavy metal.Rex Robert Brown (born July 27, 1964 in Graham, Texas) is a bassist, best known for his work with the American heavy metal band Pantera from the time the band formed in the early 80's until its dissolution in 2003. Along with former Pantera vocalist Phil Anselmo, he subsequently joined Down to replace bassist Todd Strange, and most recently played bass on the Crowbar album, Lifesblood for the Downtrodden. During the early days of Pantera Rex Brown went by the stage name Rex Rocker. It wasn't until Far Beyond Driven that both Rex Brown and Dimebag Darrell changed their stage names. Rex dropped Rex Rocker and was just credited from then on as Rex Brown and Diamond Darell was changed to Dimebag Darrell.Vinnie Paul (Vincent Paul Abbott) (born on March 11, 1964), in Dallas, Texas, United States is a heavy metal drummer and producer most known for his work in Pantera and Damageplan.Paul also incorporates elements of progressive rock and swing into his drumming. [citation needed]Paul is the son of Carolina Abbot and Jerry Abbott, a country music songwriter and producer. He played in Pantera, Tres Diablos, Damageplan, and Rebel Meets Rebel with his brother, late guitarist Dimebag Darrell. His professional musical relationship with his brother often earned them comparisons to hard rock musicians Eddie and Alex Van Halen. Currently, Paul, along with members from Mudvayne and Nothingface, have formed the supergroup - Hellyeah. His biggest influence is Peter Criss of KISSDimebag Darrell (born Darrell Lance Abbott on August 20, 1966, Arlington, Texas -- December 8, 2004, Columbus, Ohio), also known as Diamond Darrell until mid 1992, was the lead guitarist for the heavy metal bands Pantera, Damageplan and Rebel Meets Rebel.

Quote: "I knew virtually nothing about conventional music education, and didn't know how to teach singing. Above all, I knew nothing of what children's music was supposed to be. But the kids had a grasp of what they liked: emotion, drama, and making music as a group. Whether the results were good, bad, in tune or out was no big deal -- they had élan. This was not the way music was traditionally taught. But then I never liked conventional 'children's music,' which is condescending and ignores the reality of children's lives, which can be dark and scary. These children hated 'cute.' They cherished songs that evoked loneliness and sadness." - Hans Fenger, Langley music supervisor/arranger

Lagbaja is a Yoruba word that means somebody, nobody, anybody or everybody. It perfectly depicts the anonymity of the so called "common man". The mask and the name symbolize the faceless, the voiceless in the society, particularly in Africa. Once you see Lagbaja's mask you are reminded of your own facelessness. This symbolism is so powerful that Lagbaja's mask has popularized the use of the mask concept by other artistes both in Nigeria and beyond.Though the concept was developed long before that, his first album (entitled Lagbaja) was released to National acclaim in 1993. Over the years and more albums later, the music continues to fascinate with its unique focus on a core of African drums. His music is a product of various influences ranging from traditional Yoruba music to Jazz. Often the music is purely instrumental- an interplay between traditional Yoruba percussions, drums, chants, and western instruments, especially the saxophone. When there are lyrics, they are primarily sung in Yoruba, English or a blend of the two as is colloquially spoken in Yoruba cities. Many of his songs dwell on serious social issues, while others simply entertain. Some are dance inducing while others pass serious messages in humourous ways. One thing that links all the songs together is his use of traditional African drums. Traditional Yoruba drums are the most prominent. Four families of these drums are employed in creating different grooves and moods. The dundun/gangan family is the most prominent and at times up to five drummers combine all the various components to create the polyrhythms. The bata ensemble is led by two musicians who alternate between soft high toned driving rhythms with their omele bata, and thunderous loud talk with their mum drum- iya ilu. The general percussionist leads the sakara ensemble. The fourth family, used as the backbone of the groove is the ogido, a derivative of the ancient gbedu. The ensemble of drummers constitute the larger part of the band. Vocalists and western instrumentalists make up the rest. Lagbaja's groovy fusion has been refered to as afrojazz, afrobeat, higherlife and afropop until now that he himself has christened the music AFRICANO, alluding mostly to the central role of African drums and grooves in his music. In March 1997, Lagbaja established his club, Motherlan' in the heart of Ikeja in Lagos. Motherlan's design is influenced by the traditional African town or market square, where people gather under the moonlight for ceremonies and artistic events like dance, music, story telling, wrestling etc. True to this function, over the years, it has become a place for many comedians to polish their act in front of a demanding audience. With a serene gorge of beautiful trees and greens as background, the venue merges traditional Africa with the contemporary, creating the ambience of the countryside in the urban city. Lagbaja performs at Motherlan' every last Friday of the month to a full house of faithfuls. Lagbaja is fast emerging in the forefront of contemporary African music, rich in the traditions of the continent while cosmopolitan in attitude. He has started to take his music beyond the shores of Nigeria, performing in festivals and venues around the world.Lagbaja is out now on Blue Pie for the world. You can find out more on Lagbaja by visiting www.bluepie.com.au or by searching "lagbaja" at all leading digital retailers on the planet.
